INTERMITTENCY (A Review of Experimental Results) W. KITTEL

چکیده
Apart from some misunderstandings of this summer, recent developments have led to considerable progress in this controversial but challenging eld. Intermittency is now established as an eeect in at least two dimensions, where it has turned out to be stronger and cleaner than in one. The eeect is strongest in e + e ? collisions at LEP energies. At these energies parton showering has become a good candidate to explain intermittency and it could be tried as a model for other types of collision. Before that, however, the exact origin of intermittency in the shower Monte Carlo should become clear and the model should be checked on the more sensitive transverse momentum and multiplicity dependence of the eeect. Next to parton showering, intermittency is very sensitive to the soft phase, which will have to be studied in more detail at lower energies. Further insight is expected from factorial correlators, from the use of other types of moments and from the study of individual \spiky" events.

Scaling Laws for Density Correlations and Fluctuations in Multiparticle Dynamics
Experimental data are presented on particle correlations and uctuations in various high-energy multiparticle collisions, with special emphasis on evidence for scaling-law evolution in small phase-space domains. The notions of intermittency and fractality as related to the above ndings are described. Phenomenological and theoretical work on the subject is reviewed. 1 Dept. of Physics, Universita...
متن کاملType-III intermittency in a four-level coherently pumped laser.
We study a homogeneously broadened four-level model for a coherently pumped laser with pump and laser fields having crossed linear polarizations. For a parameter range of the type explored in the experiments by Tang et al. [Phys. Rev. A 44, R35 (1991)]the system exhibits a family of type-III-intermittency transitions to chaos in which the onset of intermittency is preceded by period-2, period-3...
متن کاملIntermittency and non-Gaussian fluctuations of the global energy transfer in fully developed turbulence.
We address the experimentally observed non-Gaussian fluctuations for the energy injected into a closed turbulent flow at fixed Reynolds number. We propose that the power fluctuations mirror the internal kinetic energy fluctuations. Using a stochastic cascade model, we construct the excess kinetic energy as the sum over the energy transfers at different levels of the cascade. We find an asymmetr...
متن کاملProbing turbulence intermittency via autoregressive moving-average models.
We suggest an approach to probing intermittency corrections to the Kolmogorov law in turbulent flows based on the autoregressive moving-average modeling of turbulent time series. We introduce an index Υ that measures the distance from a Kolmogorov-Obukhov model in the autoregressive moving-average model space. Applying our analysis to particle image velocimetry and laser Doppler velocimetry mea...
